COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (10-2, 4-1 OAC) played their first contest at the Capital Center in 2025 on Wednesday night, hosting Muskingum 4-8 (2-3 OAC). The Comets would come out strong in the first half, building their lead to 17 points in the first half, riding that advantage to the end, 82-65. It was CU's second 80+ point performance of the season, the other being their 84-77 overtime win in the season-opener against Denison.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cap got out to a great start, shooting 5-for-8 (62.5%) from the field and making three three-pointers in the first period. The Purple and White would conclude the quarter on a 12-5 run through the last five minutes, capped off by
Kenzie Weiland beating the buzzer from behind the arc.
Bri O'Connor and
Kya Jordan led the way, accounting for a combined 12 of the 18 total points scored by the Comets in the quarter as they took a seven-point lead into the first break, 18-11.
Capital poured it on in the second quarter, scoring 24 and holding Muskingum to just 14 as they added 10 points to their lead.
Samaree Perkins put up 11 points in the quarter and pulled down five rebounds, leaving her one board shy of a double-double in the first half. The second quarter was the best overall shooting period for the Comets as they went 8-for-12 (66.7%) en route to a 42-25 advantage at halftime.
Muskingum started to crawl back into the game in the third quarter, as the Comets surrendered what was at one point a game-high 20-point lead down to single-digits before resurging slightly to end the quarter up by 12, 53-41. It was Cap's worst stretch of the night, only accounting for two made field goals and being outscored 11-18.
However, CU would surge back thanks to
Jenna Horsley going 4-for-4 from deep for 12 points in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Perkins put up six and pulled down six – points and rebounds that is – to cap off a career night on the boards. Overall, the Purple and White would put up 29 points in the final ten minutes, shooting 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1%) from range to seal the 17-point victory, 82-65.
THE NUMBERS
Bri O'Connor scored a game-high 22 points with five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Samaree Perkins pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in addition to her 18 points for her fifth double-double of the season. Additionally, she had two blocks, one assists, and one steal. Her 17 boards is the most in a single game by a Capital player since Regan Stonerock's 19 against Heidelberg on February 6th, 2019.
Jenna Horsley had a career night with a career-high 17 points with a career-high-tying five three-pointers, going a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc with one rebound as well.
Kya Jordan tied her career-high of nine points along with six rebounds and three assists.
Maddi Weiland would finish with five points and four rebounds as well as two assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Tahirah Ellis had four points with one rebound.
Kenzie Weiland scored three points, staying a perfect 2-for-2 from deep on the season. She also had one assist, one block, and one steal.
Laney Murphy and
Kendall Spreen both accounted for two points with Murphy adding a rebound and Spreen adding an assist.

The Comets are back at the Cap Center on Saturday for their first home OAC doubleheader of the season as they host John Carroll. The women will start things off at 1:00 p.m., with the men following at 3:00 p.m.
