COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (12-3, 6-2 OAC), traveled to Marietta on Wednesday night for a primetime matchup between the third-place Comets and the fifth-place Pioneers. The Purple and White would go on to put up their highest point total of the season, scoring 20+ in the first three quarters to secure a lopsided 17-point win, 86-69.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter was very high-scoring as the two teams combined for 49 points. Off those 49, Capital would put up the majority 26 and take a slim three-point lead into the first break, 26-23.
Samaree Perkins and
Jenna Horsley led the team with nine.
The second quarter was where the Comets started to pour it on, opening with a 10-0 run led by
Bri O'Connor with five. All-in-all, CU would outscore Marietta 23-12 in the period, pulling ahead to a 49-35 lead at the half.
Bri O'Connor would score 11 in the quarter to finish the first half with 13. Perkins also put up 13 in the first half, adding four in the second quarter.
The third quarter was about as even as it would get in the game with the two sides tying at 20 points apiece for the period, leading Capital still with a 14-point advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. The teams would trade big runs starting with Marietta going 14-0 from 6:22 to 3:11 and CU responding by going 9-0 to end the quarter.
Maddi Weiland was the one to lead the lead, scoring four points, finishing with seven for the period. Perkins would also put up six more, bringing her game total to 19.
The Comets soon put the game away in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 and holding the Pioneers to 14 for a 17-point victory, 86-69. Horsley, Weiland, and O'Connor combined for nine points, with Perkins,
Kya Jordan,
Laney Murphy, and
Kenzie Weiland picking up the other eight.
THE NUMBERS
Capital put up some of their best shooting numbers of the season with a season-high 48.1% (13-27) from three-point range as well as a second-best 48.1% (26-54) overall and a third-best 84.0% (22-26) from the free throw line. The Comets also put up season highs for aforementioned points (86) as well as assists (18).
Samaree Perkins and
Bri O'Connor both scored 20+ points. Perkins put up a team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds while shooting over 50% from the field at 7-of-13, with a career-high five assists, as well as two steals. O'Connor scored 20 points with five rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
Laney Murphy and
Jenna Horsley both scored 14 points, each going 4-for-7 from downtown. Murphy finished with seven rebounds and one assist as well while Horsley had an additional two boards.
Maddi Weiland would end up with double-digits for the second time this season, scoring 10 points and adding a career-high six assists as well as six rebounds, two steals, and one block.
Kendall Spreen (3 PTS, 1 REB),
Kya Jordan (2 PTS, 2 AST, 1 REB), and
Kenzie Weiland (2 PTS) were the remaining scorers for CU.
