MARIETTA, Ohio – The third-seeded Capital University women's basketball team (19-8, 13-5 OAC) traveled to second-seeded Marietta (21-5, 15-3 OAC) on Thursday. In the end, it would not be the Comets' night, finding themselves with just 19 points at the half and facing a 49-19 deficit. The second half came with the same struggles for CU, finishing 91-43 in favor of the hosts.
THE NUMBERS
Bri O'Connor was Capital's leading scorer with 12 points. She also had three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Samaree Perkins scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds, also having two assists.
Laney Murphy and
Demi Brewer each had six points. Brewer secured eight rebounds and dished out one assist. Murphy managed three boards.
Tahira Ellis ended with three points and three rebounds.
Katie Burke,
Maddi Weiland, and
Maddie Dougoud each scored two points. Weiland would wind up with five rebounds, while Burke got one two boards, one assist, and one steal, and Dougoud grabbed one rebound and had one block.
LOOKING FORWARD
With the loss, Capital's season most likely has come to end, the only hope of continuation being an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. History shows the OAC receiving two at-large bids to the tournament last season in addition to the automatic bid for the conference champion. Taking the Comets' overall season into account, a case might be made for a fourth bid for the OAC this season, however the chances are slim.
With that being said, if the season has come to an end, the night marked the final game in the careers of
Demi Brewer,
Katie Burke,
Maddie Dougoud, and
Sydney Bourquin. Looking ahead, CU has 14 possible returners, including four starters in
Bri O'Connor,
Laney Murphy,
Samaree Perkins, and
Maddi Weiland, and will be a force to be reckoned with in the OAC next season.
