COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team used two goals just four minutes apart in the first half to defeat Roanoke College, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Capital, now 2-0 to start the year, got on the board after calmly fending off early pressure from Roanoke.
Brennan Hesse disrupted a ball in midfield and the ball ended up on the foot of
Jack Kossoudji who turned and sprinted downfield. After committing the last defender, he laid off a pass for
Derrick Harris who one-touched the ball past the charging Maroon goalie. The goal put the Comets ahead 1-0 and was the first of Harris' career. Kossoudji's assist was his second of the season already.
Having set up one already, Kossoudji got himself on the board as he split the defense and squeezed a shot under the diving arm of Roanoke's goalkeeper. This time, Hesse's midfield disruption was enough to credit him with the assist that set Kossoudji on his way to goal.
Just as the assist was his second of the year, Kossoudji's goal marked his second of the season as well.
Roanoke's (0-2) only goal, despite a huge share of possession and chances in the second half, came in just the 48th minute as a pass across goal was turned into his own net by Hesse.
Allowing just the one goal, sophomore goalkeeper
Ethan Ogden stood tall and made four saves on the day. Senior defender
Alex Moore also came up big with two huge saves on the line for the Comet defense.
Battling the heat all afternoon, the two teams committed a combined 32 fouls yielding nine yellow cards.
Capital will take a week to rest, before traveling to Cleveland next Saturday, September 9th to battle Case Western Reserve. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
