LEXINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University tennis teams hit the court together on Saturday, both playing host to Alma at Lakewood Racquet Club.
The Capital women took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then went 4-2 in the singles matches to secure the 6-3 victory.
The Capital men nearly copied the women's result, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles, then taking three of the singles matches to win 5-4 overall.
WOMEN (6-3)
The first doubles pair of
Anna Fletcher and
Nicole Flock got things going with a 8-5 win in their match.
Alma got a point back in second doubles, defeating Cap's duo of
Abigail Hornacek and
Kylee Fliter 8-5.
The final point came down to the wire with the Comets pulling out an 8-7 win going 7-0 in the tiebreaker.
Leading 2-1 going into the singles matches, Capital needed at least three wins to guarantee an overall victory. They did themselves one better, taking four of the singles matches to win 6-3 overall.
Anna Fletcher picked up a point in first singles, winning 6-3, 6-2.
Alma would barely get one back in the second singles match, edging out
Nicole Flock in the tiebreaker 10-7 after each taking a set 6-2.
Amy Wright-Lovell got the Comets back on track with a 10-7 tiebreaker win over her opponent. She had won the first set 6-1 but dropped the second set 6-2.
Abigail Hornacek went on to win her match in fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4. This point ensured an overall victory but the Comets were not stopping there as
Jenny Rollins secured a sixth point for Capital, defeating her foe in sixth singles, 6-3, 6-2.
The fifth singles match went to the Scots, as
Kylee Fliter fell 7-6, 6-2.
MEN (5-4)
The Comets got out to a strong start winning first and second doubles. The first doubles duo of
Spencer Surles and
Brady Wink won their match in 8-6 fashion and second doubles pair
Thomas Secrist and
Alex Rowley followed suit with a 7-4 tiebreaker win in an 8-7 victory.
Alma did get a point back, taking the third doubles match from
Aaron Askew and
Nicholas Wines 8-1. It was Wines' first official scorebook appearance for the Comets.
Just like the women, leading 2-1 going into the singles matches, Capital needed at least three wins to guarantee an overall victory. And that's exactly what they got, winning first, second, and fourth singles to take the day, 5-4.
Spencers Surles took first singles in tiebreaker fashion 11-9, giving him set victories of 6-3 and 6-7.
Thomas Secrist and
Jesse Stevens won second and fourth singles in identical fashion 6-3, 6-1.
Brady Wink would fall in third singles 6-1, 6-0. He was joined by
