Second Quarter Swing Helps Women’s Basketball Topple Mount Union

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team (5-4, 2-2 OAC) hosted Mount Union (5-4, 2-2 OAC) on Saturday afternoon in what was their last contest before heading into the winter break. The Comets started off sluggish but a huge second quarter swung the game into CU's favor. With the momentum in hand, Cap put together an even better second half and soared to a 72-53 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital got off to a very slow start in the early going, seemingly unable to see a shot go down. The struggle was especially felt from behind the three-point line, going 1-of-10 as a team in the first 10 minutes. As a result, the Comets found themselves behind 22-13 at the first break.

The second quarter was a completely different story as Capital held the Purple Raiders to just six points and scored 18 of their own to take a 31-28 lead into halftime. It was the 11-0 run mounted by the Comets in the last 5:46 that would be the difference-maker. Demi Brewer and Maddi Weiland were the main proponents of the comeback, Brewer with nine points and Weiland with seven. All-in-all, CU's shooting was much improved at 7-for-15 (46.7%) and 3-of-6 (50.0%) from deep.

Capital kept it going in the third quarter as they increased their lead by 11. Laney Murphy put up eight points in the period to lead the Comets to a 55-41 advantage as they headed into the final break. Cap also put up their best completion rate of the game, going 10-for-19 (52.6%) in the quarter and 4-of-9 (44.4%) from behind the three-point line.

Capital continued to pull away in the fourth period as they added seven points to their advantage. Bri O'Connor made up the difference as Cap's leading scorer in the quarter with seven points to her name. When it was all said and done, the Comets would come away with a 19-point win, 72-53.
