Football’s Season Comes to a Close

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University football team played their final game of the 2023 season on Saturday, falling to Heidelberg on the road, 31-17. The Comets finish 1-9 overall and 1-8 in the OAC with that lone win coming over arch-rivals Otterbein on September 30th. 

Capital notched their first score of the day with 4:37 left in the first quarter of a one-yard quarterback rush from Ben Everson. It wouldn't be until the fourth quarter when the Comets found the endzone again, this time via a 23-yard touchdown pass from Everson to Nate Younker. CU kicker Tyler Terrell would score a 25-yard field goal later on in the quarter to bring the team's final total to 17. Unfortunately for the Comets, there were 34 points scored by the other side as Heidelberg found themselves with four touchdowns and one field goal. 

The Comets had 312 yards of total offense, 114 on the ground and 198 in the air. Capital's defense totalled three takeaways – two interceptions and one fumble recovery – as well as two sacks that added up to 15 yards. 

Eveson completed 12 of his 28 passes for a total of 198 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, he tallied 20 yards and one touchdown.

The rushing unit was led by Troi McClary with 11 carries for 68 yards, followed by Albree Grose with 10 attempts for 26. Nate Younker led the receiving corps with seven catches for 107 yards and one touchdown, with a long of 48. Mike Elmore made three catches for 61 yards. Bennett Zerby and Grose each had one reception, Grose's for 25 yards and Zerby for five. 

James Curtis and Nick Fisanick each had 11 total tackles. Curtis came away with seven solo tackles and four assists, along with one sack for a loss of seven yards. Overall he had 2.5 tackles for loss that totalled 14 yards lost. Fisanick scored five solo tackles with six assists as well as 1.5 tackles for loss. Tyson Shutler (8 Solo, 1 Assist) and Griffin McKinney (5 Solo, 4 Assist) each followed with nine total tackles.
