COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team (9-6-1, 3-4-1 OAC) had a night against Heidelberg (3-13-1, 0-8-0 OAC) on Wednesday at home. Quite literally everyone got in on the action as the Comets put up a 10-0 scoreline and cleared the bench, including keepers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It all got started with
Jack Kossoudji and what was quite possibly one of the quickest hat tricks in NCAA history. Kossoudji would score three goals within the first 9:56 to complete the feat. He netted the first two at the 1:11 and 2:02 marks, the first coming via an assist from
Brennan Hesse and the second coming via penalty. Kossoudji completed the trifecta at the aforementioned 9:56 mark, with an assist coming from
Jarrett Puckett.
Capital would go on to add two more before the end of the half thanks to
Devon Hess in the 15th minute and
Jack Francisco in the 43rd. Hess was assisted by Kossoudji. Francisco was assisted by
Colin McComb.
The Comets came back with five more goals in the second half, two of which were scored by starting keeper
Connor Sexton who donned the #5 shirt and played the final six minutes at forward. However, it was
Mujahid Abdel-Ghani,
Jacob Deever, and
Brendon Dorsett with the first three strikes of the second half. Abdel-Ghani would get his goal in the 67th minute, securing another assist for Puckett. Deever would slice up the defense on his own, scoring unassisted just over a minute later in the 68th. Dorsett added his piece in the 71st minute via a penalty kick.
Then came what everyone was hoping to see: for the final six minutes Capital keepers Sexton and
Ethan Ogden – wearing #3 – subbed in to play forward. Both would get good scoring chances but it was Sexton who stole the spotlight, scoring in 87th and 89th minutes to put the game away. The first came off of a throw-in from
Samuel Yocum that found Sexton's head and the back of the net shortly thereafter. One goal was enough to get the crowd on their feet, but Sexton would surprise everyone with a second after ending up on the receiving end of a cross from Hess, hammering it home with his right boot to take the Comets to a 10-0 final score.
THE NUMBERS
Kossoudji's hat trick is the second of his career and leaves him with 10 goals on the year, good enough to tie for first in the OAC. His assist also gives him eight this season as well as a total of 28 points. Kossoudji sits atop the conference in those two categories as well: first in points and second in assists.
Hess netted his fifth goal of the season and secured his second assist. Franscisco found his fourth score of the year while Abdel-Ghani and Deever each got their second. Dorsett scored the first goal of his career.
Puckett's two assists are his first two of the season. McComb's was the first of his career.
Sexton started the night as a keeper – playing the first 45 minutes – and finished as a forward. He made one save in his second win of the season (2-0-0). His two goals are the first of his career and came on the first two shots of his career as well, leaving him with a perfect 1.000 career shot percentage.
Kellen Sargent finished the night in the net for the Comets, playing the final 45 and making two saves to keep the shutout alive.
