Cross Country Competes Under the Lights

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – On Friday evening, the Capital University cross country teams traveled to Cedarville University where they took part in the All-Ohio Championships.

This year, the event was held at night with portable lights illuminating the race course. A year ago, many runners suffered adverse effects due to the heat during the middle of the day, so a night race was welcomed.

The highlight of the day for both programs were Anya Vanasdale and Donovan Slattery improving their positioning on the top-20 leaderboard at Capital in their respective distances.

WOMEN
Anya Vanasdale paced the Comet women with a 47th overall finish. Her time of 19:04.0 was good enough to move her up six spots on the Capital all-time list to third best on a 5K course. Entering this evening's run, Anya sat ninth best with a time of 19:59.5. Her time of 19:04 ran tonight allows her to jump past Melissa Burgei's 19:09 ran in 2005.

Eva Bernhardt was next to cross the finish line for Capital with a time of 21:11.7. This time set her 181st out of more than 330 runners.

Elizabeth Mak finished 245th with a time of 22:18.3. Tonight's time was just over a minute faster than her previous best.

Allison Costanzo placed 286th with a time of 23:49.0. Her time was nearly three minutes faster than her previous best of 26:28.4 at the Muskie Opener.

Kylynn Barr rounded out the performances from the women with a time of 24:02.5. Barr's time was more than two minutes faster than her debut run at the Muskie Opener.

MEN
Donovan Slattery was the first Comet male to cross the line in the men's 8K race. Slattery placed 90th overall with a time of 26:24.7, which bettered his previous best of 26:41.3 by nearly 20 seconds. The new best for Donovan moves him up three spots on the Capital all-time list to eighth overall, surpassing Bryan DeArdo's 26:28 from 2008.

Freshman Jackson Roes was next for Capital with a time of 27:55.4 in his first career 8K race. Roes has a bright future ahead as he sits just 40 seconds off the top-20 list in Capital history.

Fellow newcomer Zach Glotzbecker finished just 10 seconds back from Roes with a time of 28:05.2 in his debut 8K.

The next three finishers came in a bunch. Grant Wessler finished with a time of 30:08.1. Zach Brown clocked a time of 30:16.5. Max Kramer was not far back with a time of 30:33.8.

The final two to finish for Capital were Bobby Cole (31:27.1) and Jason McColl (32:19.9).

UP NEXT
