WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Capital University men's soccer team traveled to Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon where they looked to pick up a strong road result. Unfortunately for the Comets, they saw the opening goal from
Devon Hess canceled out, and the hosts score two unanswered goals to claim a 2-1 victory.
The result pegs Capital back to 1-2 on the young season, with the road remaining difficult throughout the next couple of weeks. W&J improved to 2-1 with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital went ahead in the 12 minute of play as the referee's whistle gave the Purple and White a penalty kick from 12 yards out. With the freebie opportunity, sophomore
Devon Hess stepped up to convert the PK, netting his third goal of the campaign – already tying his season total from a year ago.
Unfortunately for Cap the lead was short lived as just eight minutes later, the President's Parker Byas scored a goal off an assist from McKinley Joseph, leveling the score at 1-1.
The tied score would ride through until 30 seconds remained in the first half, when Capital's
Colin McComb was called for a foul in the defensive penalty area, giving W&J a PK of their own. Claude Irankunda stepped up and made amends for his foul that set up Hess's goal earlier in the game. Irankunda's goal pushed the hosts ahead 2-1.
Throughout the second half, the Comets outshot the Presidents by a 7-4 margin, but could just not find a way past Charles Boldosser in the hosts net.
THE NUMBERS
Devon Hess now has a team-best three goals this season and six to his name as he continues to get his sophomore campaign going this year.
