COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Wednesday afternoon, the Capital University men's tennis team took on Baldwin Wallace University in the OAC Quarterfinals and unfortunately came up short by a final score of 5-3. The final match-up was unfinished midway through the first set as BW had clinched the match-deciding fifth team point.
The Comets conclude their season with an overall record of 9-14 and a conference record of 3-3.
The doubles action went in the favor of the visitors, in a near carbon copy of how last Saturday's match went when the two teams faced off in regular season action. BW won two of the three doubles matches at first and third pairings, while Capital won the second pairing. Trey Kernan and Matt McGee defeated
Leonardo Abreu and
Colin Welch 8-2 at #1, while Aidan Hicks and Adam Zeidler knocked off
Jesse Stevens and
Aaron Askew 8-6 at #2. Capital's second pairing of
Alex Stout and
Spencer Surles defeated Caleb Reed and Anthony Tosatto 8-4 at the #2 spot.
In singles play Capital began an ascent back to even the score back at 3-3. After
Leonardo Abreu fell to Matt McGee 6-2, 6-3,
Spencer Surles and
Colin Welch won at both third and fourth singles to level the score at three each. Surles defeated Aidan Hicks while Welch knocked off Anthony Tosatto, both by scores of 6-1 and 7-5.
The next match to finish was the number two singles contest between
Alex Stout and Trey Kernan. Kernan took the first set 7-5 before Stout roared back for a 6-1 win in set two. Unfortunately, Kernan turned it on to win the third set 6-0 and bump BW ahead 4-3.
As the top four finished up, the courts opened up for number five and number six singles to take place. There, BW's Adam Zeidler cruised to a 6-1 and 6-2 at fifth singles over
Jesse Stevens. With that point giving BW the team win, the number six singles match-up was halted with BW's Jack Hindman ahead 3-2 in the first set and the final score for the match settling at 5-3.
The Comets concluded a solid campaign this year that featured a young and inexperienced roster playing against some of the region's and nation's best throughout the year, thus showing great signs of improvement for years to come.
