Unforgettable Women’s Lacrosse Season Comes to a Close in NCAA Second Round

CHICAGO, Ill. – The magical and unforgettable 2022 season for the Capital University women's lacrosse team came to a close in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday afternoon.

Capital endured their first loss of the season at the hands of the No. 20 ranked University of Chicago by a final score of 19-14.

The Comets season ends with an astonishing record of 20-1. Along the way they secured 10 wins over OAC opponents and locked up the OAC Regular Season and Tournament titles. Cap also won its first ever NCAA Tournament game in the first round – a 21-4 triumph over Hamline University.

With the win, Chicago will advance to the third round where they will play No. 2 ranked Middlebury College next Saturday.

In today's game, Brooke Delara wrote the final chapter in her storied Capital career with an eight-point showing on five goals and three assists. With the three helpers, Delara finishes the season with 88 assists on the year, a number that puts her in a three-way tie for second most in a single-season in NCAA history. Already, Capital career-point leader, Delara finishes her career with 389 points – a number that is tied for 21st most in D-III history as well. Her 167 points this season sit her third all-time in NCAA Division III history for total points in a single season. In her career, Delara finished with 201 assists, a number that sits her in a tie for 10th all-time in NCAA history.

With a hat-trick in today's game, Grace Osborn finishes off her stellar freshman year with 126 goals and 156 points, coupled with her 30 assists. She led all three divisions in scoring this year, and her 126 goals rank her third all-time in D-III history for a single-season. Her 156 points are good enough for fourth all-time in a single-season just behind Delara.

Luci Kanowsky scored a hat-trick today as well as having an assist, giving her 90 goals and 31 assists on the year for 121 points. She finished with 192 career goals at Capital – third most in program history.

Also adding goals today were Katie Page with two and Dylan Smith with one.

In terms of ground balls, Katie Page led the team with four. Joining her on the scoop squad were Molly Searles and Delara with three GBs, Osborn and Hanna Searles with two GBs, and Maddy Radanof, Avery Hart, and Bee Kuehn with one GB apiece.

On the draw control, Capital was outmatched 17-20. Osborn led the team with six DC grabs. Delara was a close runner up with four. Page and Hart each secured three draws, while Skyla Caito scooped up one.

Bee Kuehn made 11 saves in the contest, bringing her season total to 124. She ended her career with 267 stops.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital grabbed the early lead after the defense forced an empty opening possession for the Maroons, Brooke Delara fed the ball into Luci Kanowsky who slam dunked the shot into the back of the net, pushing Cap out to 1-0.

Just under two minutes later, Jane Chen equalized for the hosts. Out of the ensuing draw, Brooke Delara garnered control and sprinted the ball down to find Grace Osborn who earned a free-position shot – one that she dispatched with ease to put Capital back in front 2-1.

On the next draw, Delara once again won control, a possession that led to another goal, this time from Katie Page to move in front 3-1.

The early momentum from the Comets was quickly met by a six-goal run from the Maroons, including five before the end of the first quarter.

An unassisted tally from Brooke Delara with 12:53 left in the second quarter slowed the Chicago momentum, but the Maroons responded with two more goals to lead 8-4.

Delara and Grace Osborn then put together back-to-back goals to trim the lead down to 8-6.

After Chicago scored another to push the score to 9-6, a wild final minute of the first half ensued. First Brooke Delara scored with 53 seconds remaining, then Chicago scored twice, then Delara scored again off a feed from Luci Kanowsky, this time with seven seconds left. Four goals in 53 seconds of play brought the intermission score to 11-8 in favor of the hosts.

Out of the halftime break, Katie Page and Luci Kanowksy scored two quickfire goals, to trim the lead down to just one goal with plenty of game left to play.

Unfortunately for Capital, the Maroons scored eight consecutive goals through the end of the third and the start of the fourth to all but clinch the result.

Despite being down 19-10, Capital finished the final two minutes on a high, as Kanowsky, Osborn, Dylan Smith, and Delara all found the back of the cage before the final horn sounded – providing a positive moment for the team to end their truly spectacular season on.
