Football Wraps Up 2022 Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, the Capital University football team took to the brisk and snowy conditions at Bernlohr Stadium to compete in their final game of the 2022 season against Heidelberg University.

Despite one of their better performances on offense today, the Comets came up on the wrong end of the scoreboard 44-30 at the end of the game.

The first quarter scoring came for the Student Princes on a safety as a high snap on a Capital punt skipped across the wet turf and through the back of the end zone.

Despite being down 2-0, Capital got in front by the end of the first quarter as Trevor Harrison-Rawn connected with Aralius Walters Jr. on a one-yard passing touchdown with just under a minute left before the first quarter break. A big 29-yard pass from Harrison-Rawn to Mike Elmore helped move the drive along.

The Student Princes took back the lead on the first play of the second quarter on a one-yard rushing score from Montavious Yearby – his first of what would be four total touchdowns on the day.

Capital got back in front on their next drive as Harrison-Rawn connected with fellow senior Sam Pickett for a 22-yard touchdown score. Pickett made a nice leaping grab before muscling his way into the end zone from five-yards out.

The back-and-forth continued as Heidelberg got a second rushing score from Yearby to make it 16-14 with 7:16 left before the half.

A few drives later, the Comets took back the lead 17-16 on a 35-yard field goal by Tyler Terrell

On the ensuing possession from Heidelberg, the Capital defense got the ball back on their first play. Quarterback Drew Sims threw to Dimitri Penick for a 24-yard gain in which Penick was immediately met by a thunderous tackle from Diamonte Salley. The hit freed up the ball that was recovered by Capital's Louie Hoersten. The long return by Hoersten was nullified by a penalty, but nonetheless, Capital ball with just over a minute left before halftime.

Unfortunately for Capital, the new found possession did not lead to points for them, rather, an interception by Kingston Mabatah at the 50-yard line was returned for a touchdown to make the score 23-17 heading to the break.

In the third quarter, Heidelberg found the scoreboard first on a 54-yard pass from Sims to Yearby to go ahead 30-14.

With that momentum from Yearby's score, the Student Princes tacked on another score to make it 37-17, this time courtesy of a 22-yard touchdown from Sims to Oliver Kelleher.

Despite this, Capital replied on their next drive as Harrison-Rawn hit Jamal Wiggins for 50-yards to the end zone. The ensuing PAT was blocked by Heidelberg's Bennett Roberts marking the first missed kick of the season from Capital's Tyler Terrell.

In the fourth quarter each team got a touchdown, as Heidelberg hung on for the two-score win. First, Montavious Yearby punched in his fourth score of the day, before the Comets took advantage of yet another big defensive play.

This time, Jesse Foster forced a strip sack on Heidelberg's Chayne Treharn and the ensuing fumble was recovered by Preston Sweet on the two-yard line. On just one play, Jonathan Williams punched in a two-yard run to cap off the scoring on the day, 44-30.
