Women’s Basketball Overwhelmed at No. 16 Marietta

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University women's basketball team traveled to southeastern Ohio on Wednesday for a head-to-head matchup with the No. 16 ranked Marietta Pioneers. In the end the Pioneers were too much for the Comets as Marietta took down Capital by a score of 91-69.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got out to a good start in the first quarter, leading the game at one point and staying within a few marks of the Pioneers throughout the first quarter. Laney Murphy led the way in the first, putting up eight points in the period and knocking down two three-pointers.

Overall, Capital got out to a hot start shooting, hitting six of their first nine shots and going 2-of-3 from behind the arc. However, a Capital cold streak allowed Marietta to pull ahead and the Pioneers led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Comets were able to hold steady with the Pioneers in terms of shooting, pulling a 63-percent mark from the field. However, Marietta was able to pour in a higher volume of shots, pulling further ahead in the second period with the score 30-55 at the half.

In the third quarter Capital continued to compete and pour in shots at a high percentage, but were once again outscored by the Pioneers and found themselves further behind at the third break.

The fourth quarter came as a carbon-copy of the first three with the Pioneers using the fast break to get easy shots near the basket. The margin on the boards also proved detrimental to the Purple and White as Marietta took advantage of offensive rebounds which led to a multitude of second chance points.

In the late stages of the game Capital was able to put together a solid run to the buzzer with the help of key bench players. Katie Burke came in to score six points and gather two rebounds. Kenzie Weiland went perfect from the line, scoring six points on six free throws. Demi Brewer dished out a team-leading five assists, sharing that title with Laney Murphy, and collected two points and one rebound in her time on the floor. Finally, Gabby Ledbetter racked up six points on 2-of-3 shooting and went a perfect 2-for-2 from the line with four rebounds. When it was all said and done, the scoreboard read 91-69 in favor of the Pioneers.
