WEST LAFAYETTE, Ohio – The Capital University men's golf team battled through 72 holes of play in three days in a highly competitive championship weekend. At the end of a three-day adventure at River Greens Golf Course, the Crusaders left the course with a third-place finish and one All-OAC selection.
The men's championship was played in a 27-27-18 format beginning on Friday, April 30. While breaks came in between rounds, Capital maintained its place between third and fourth place throughout the entire weekend. Consistency over the first 54 holes kept them in the race for a top-2 finish in the championship. However, Sunday's round solidified Cap's spot for third after the final tally showed a team score of 1,227 over 72 holes.
Ben Satterthwaite served up three straight rounds of strong play with back-to-back rounds of 75 and then storming through the course and posting a 73 as part of his 27 holes played on Saturday. Satterthwaite held third place through the first two full days but slid back to fifth and shooting an 80 on Sunday's round of 18 holes. He finished the weekend with a 1,227 four-round score and with a fifth-place finish overall, Satterthwaite earned his first career all-conference selection.
Capital's first-round team score of 307 was constructed by the additions of
Angelo Donato (77),
Andrew Simpson (75) and
Colin Frimel (80). That same tandem helped put together a near-identical second round total of 308.
Shane Murphy entered the equation when he turned his fortunes around and shot a 77 to close out the third round of 18 holes. Round three served as Capital's best round, a 302, which was good for a share for the lowest round three score.
Out of second place by just three strokes and 14 out of first place, Capital had a shot to better its status on Sunday's final round. Cap's score of 310 on Sunday secured its placement with the team's low score coming from Frimel (74).
Cap finished 12 shots back of second-place John Carroll (1215) while Otterbein (1207) was crowned OAC Champion. Otterbein's Coury Rogers (296) finished as OAC Champion.
