BEREA, Ohio – In a down-to-the-wire match against Baldwin Wallace University, the Capital University men's tennis team defeated the Yellow Jackets at the Pop Collins Tennis Courts in its regular season finale. Capital improved to 2-4 on the year following its 5-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Capital took two of three doubles matches to open up the match with wins coming on courts one and three.
Graeme Green and
Ven Naik continued their run of success with an 8-6 victory over Trey Kernan and Michael Benotti. Cap's second point on the doubles side came from the duo of
Aaron Askew and
Nathan Hartzler, which defeated Jonathan Brunnet and Mateo Gonzalez by an 8-5 score.
Green made easy work of Kernan in the top-flight singles bout having not surrendered a point in his quick victory. Baldwin Wallace picked up wins on courts two, three and four, highlighted by a marathon between
Ven Naik and Michael Benotti. Benotti took the first set, 7-6 (7-5), but Naik returned with a 6-1 win to tie the match in response. The third set was played as a super tiebreaker, which Benotti took 13-11 to earn the point.
Baldwin Wallace's Mateo Gonzalez was forced to retire in the third set in his match again Nathan Harztler, leaving
Aaron Askew's match with Jonathan Brunnet on court five. Askew rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory to account for point number 5.
With the regular season concluded, Capital will now prepare for the OAC Men's Tennis Tournament to be held this week. Capital holds the number five seed in the tournament and will open with a road trip to fourth-seeded Mount Union. That match will be played on Tuesday, May 4, at 3:30 p.m.
