COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University and Otterbein University football teams squared off in the 94th edition of its annual rivalry match on Friday night at Purmort Field at Bernlohr Stadium. The Cardinals pulled away from the Crusaders for a 47-10 victory in each team's fourth game of the season.
Prior to the game, Capital Cheer honored its three seniors while CU Football gave recognition to its six that plan on graduating and moving on following this season. Pregame kudos were given to Gabriella Engorglia, Maria Severino, Hailey Sullivan,
Andrew Ray,
Wyatt Long,
Jaden Gianettino,
Joshua McSweeney,
Blake Middleton, and
Dylan Schoonover.
Once the ball started flying, the pomp and circumstance began shifting sides. Otterbein scored first on its opening drive after Mitch Moyer landed in the end zone to close out a nine-play, 70-yard drive. Capital answered right back with a touchdown drive immediately after.
Aralius Walters set up a short field with the first of multiple long kickoff returns. Junior
Luke McCarrell led the Crusaders the rest of the way and put six points on the board with an 8-yard touchdown pass to
Michael Smith, followed by senior
Blake Middleton's point-after try.
Otterbein came back with a long kickoff return to set up a very short field. Four plays later the Cardinals' Siraj Muhammad found pay dirt on a 6-yard touchdown run. Capital then benefited from a muffed snap by punter Adyn Snyder deep in Otterbein territory and turned that miscue into three point when Middleton hit a 35-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 Cardinal advantage.
The Cardinals then went on to score 33 unanswered points and prevented Capital from scoring for the duration of the game. Capital's offense struggled, achieving just four first downs and netting 92 yards of total offense. Quarterback Bryce Hall threw for 294 of Otterbein's 301 passing yards.
Nick Fisanick ended the day with 15 total tackles (4 solo, 11 assisted).
Kobe Swackhammer rolled out 10 stops, including 2.5 for a loss. Cap collected three sacks with
Dez Turkson,
Wyatt Long,
Trey Zimmer, and
Keith Jordan getting in the mix.
The loss drops Capital to 0-4 on its abbreviated season, while Otterbein improves to 1-3. The all-time series now favors Otterbein, 46-45-1.
The seedings for the final game of the season have come out; however, Baldwin Wallace University and Capital have both opted to not play its final game. This ends the Spring 2021 football season for CU.
