BEXLEY, Ohio – On a beautiful Tuesday evening, the Capital University women's lacrosse team knocked off visiting Marietta College by a final score of 19-7 to advance in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.
The win pushes Capital's overall record to 12-2 and schedules them for a Tournament Semi-Final at The University of Mount Union on Thursday, April 29th. Marietta concludes their season with a 7-10 record.
Capital got out of the gates a bit slower than usual, but eventually found their groove rattling off 14 first-half goals to take a 14-3 lead into halftime.
Luci Kanowsky was the dominant force offensively for the Purple and White as she netted five goals and assisted on three others in the first half hour of play.
Dylan Smith scored the game's first goal off an unconventional feed from
Skyla Caito. Smith reacted quickest to the bouncing pass across goal and swooped in for a surprise goal. After the Smith goal, Capital added two more from Kanowsky and
Brooke Delara before Marietta got back into the game.
The Pioneers added two goals -- sandwiched around a Kanowsky tally for Cap -- off the sticks of Hope Adams and Shannon Doyle to bring the game to 4-2. The margin would be as close as Marietta would come as Capital settled in began to pull away.
With the score at 6-3, Cap scored eight straight goals to close out the first half of play, all but sealing the result.
Marietta held toe-for-toe with Capital in the second half, but another string of goals, this time by Kanowsky,
Brianna Rampi, and Kat Walton, pushed the Crusaders to the victory.
In total, Capital controlled the stat sheet in all categories -- shots (33-19), saves (8-7), ground balls (9-6), and fewer turnovers (9-15).
Kanowsky dominated up front with a 10-point game behind seven goals and three assists. Delara, Rampi and
Dana Stover all added hat-tricks for Capital. Delara and Walton were main facilitators as they picked up three and two assists respectively.
On the defensive side of things, Walton had a team best four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Molly Searles also caused two of Marietta's 15 team turnovers.
The Pioneers got all their offense from two players as Shannon Doyle netted five times and Hope Adams scored a pair.
In the cage,
Bee Kuehn earned the win, saving eight Pioneer shots. Maddie Leers and Lauren Redfern combined for seven saves for Marietta.
Capital will return to action on Thursday as they travel to the University of Mount Union for a 7 p.m. game. The game is sure to live up to the hype as the teams played to an 18-17 scoreline during the regular season.
