SUNBURY, Ohio – The Capital University men's golf team took in a runner-up finish at this weekend's Cardinal Super Classic, a two-day event hosted by Otterbein University the NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury, Ohio.
Day one featured less-than-idle conditions that caused trouble for the entire field. Despite wind, rain and cold,
Andrew Simpson emerged as one of the top performers of the day behind a 2-over par 74 following the end of round 1. He tied three others for the second-lowest score of the day and put Cap in a good position to compete for the team title following the conclusion of Saturday's action.
Also contributing toward Cap's team totals on Saturday were
Shane Murphy and
Vince Daher, each of whom punched out with a 79 on the day, plus
Ben Satterthwaite, who carded an 80.
With Cap's 312 round 1 score, the Crusaders found themselves just eight shots back of host Otterbein heading into Sunday's round.
The skies cleared and thermometers rose for Sunday's action at NorthStar, where Otterbein took control of the event. The Cardinals lowered their score by six strokes while Capital dropped two from the previous day's account.
On Sunday, the Crusaders were paced by
Vince Daher, who shaved two strokes off of his round two score and ended the weekend with a 156 (79-77), tied for the team weekend low.
Shane Murphy also modeled a consistent effort by lowering his score by one shot to end with a 157 for the weekend (79-78). Despite falling back with a second-round score of 82, Simpson still tied for the team low (156) for his round of 36.
Angelo Donato (162) also factored into Sunday's round, showing a four-stroke improvement with a 79 in his final 18 holes. Satterthwaite replicated his effort on Sunday, carding another 80.
Otterbein took the team title with its combined score of 602 (304-298), with Kurt Foreman (70-73=143) taking medalist honors. Following Cap (312-314=626) in third was Marietta College (629), Ohio Northern (637), and Muskingum (641).
This weekend's event wraps up the regular season for Cap and they will now prepare for the OAC Men's Golf Championship to be held at River Greens Golf Club in West Lafayette, Ohio on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2.
