Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Linder’s Big Night Leads Women’s Basketball to Comeback Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Erika Linder and the Capital University women's basketball team stormed back from an 11-point deficit in front of a crowd of 650 fans on the road at Wittenberg University and knocked off the hosts by a final score of 60-55 in overtime to get back in the win column after a four-game skid.

Capital, now 2-4 overall, hung with the Tigers across the first quarter, but a hot second quarter from the hosts led to the large deficit. Linder -- who had scored just four points during the first half -- poured in nine third-quarter points to set the Comets back into the game. Linder then came back in the overtime period with five points to seal the deal for Capital.

Overall, Linder finished with a new career-best 20 points on 50% shooting from the floor. She was good on 7-of-8 free throws, including a 5-of-6 mark in the extra time. Rounding out a quality night, Linder added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Helping to lead the comeback efforts were Maddie Dougoud, Brooke Ommert, Laney Murphy, Maddy Reese, and Nicole Flock, among others.

Dougoud scored 12 points and had a team-best seven rebounds off the bench. Ommert scored 10 points, had five rebounds, and swiped three steals. Murphy netted eight points and had two steals, but made her mark with the tying 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation. Reese and Flock both combined for seven points, but also each had four assists to help facilitate the action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Across the early goings, Capital got ahead with a 4-0 lead after 4:14 of the game had elapsed. Jumpers by Brooke Ommert and Nicole Flock helped Cap get off the ground. Across the end of the first quarter, Wittenberg closed on a 13-7 run to claim the lead, one they would hold onto until late in the fourth quarter.

The Comets reached the halftime intermission trailing by a score of 33-22, struggling to stay with the Tigers. After the halftime break, Cap came out reorganized and ready to chip away at the 11-point deficit.

In the third quarter, Erika Linder decided to help Capital back into the game. Across the 10 minutes of play, Linder poured in nine of her game-high 20 points, hitting a 3-pointer and a back-to-back layups to close the gap. Eventually, the Tigers were able to slow Linder and the Comets on their comeback effort as a layup from Autumn Crockett pushed the hosts out to a 12-point lead -- their largest of the game -- with 6:16 left in the quarter.

From there, Capital finished the frame on a 9-2 run, aided by successful free throw shooting from Kaylee Cyphers, Erika Linder, and Maddy Reese

Trailing by five, the Comets pushed for more in the fourth quarter. In the final frame, the team worked well together to chip away at the Tigers advantage. This time, a jump shot from Maddie Dougoud, followed by a layup from Nicole Flock spurred a strong run. Later in the frame, two more baskets from Dougoud and a layup from Reese brought Cap within two at 50-48 with 3:14 left on the clock.

Capital first tied the game back up on a baseline jumper from Brooke Ommert. Maddy Reese drove well to the basket and dished out to Ommert to nail down the shot.

With the game tied, Wittenberg's Abigail Yunker completed a three-point-play and pushed Witt back ahead by three. Just 18 seconds after Yunker's play, Capital had an inbounds play under their own basket. Off the pass, Linder found Laney Murphy with two players pressuring her. Murphy caught the pass and knocked down the biggest shot of her young career and tied the game at 53-53. The final 46 seconds ticked away with no score, sending the game to OT.

In the extra time, the Comets were scored on first, but a layup from Maddie Dougoud, five made free throws from Erika Linder, and strong team defensive play sealed the win in favor of Cap 60-55.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Across the game, both teams shot the ball at a relatively identical pace, with Capital holding the slight edge on 42% from the floor, compared to Witt's 41%.

The Comets held the advantage on the glass with 31 rebounds compared to the Tigers' 25 boards.

Both teams turned the ball over more than they would've liked, but Capital made Witt pay for their lost possessions, by scoring 20 points off turnovers, compared to Witt's 15.

Capital out-passed the Tigers, racking up 14 assists, while Wittenberg managed just 10 assists.
