Men’s Soccer Slips to Otterbein; Advances to OAC Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Saturday evening, the Capital University men's soccer team played a hard-fought, physical match against No. 8 ranked Otterbein University. Despite the hard play, Capital came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision.

The Comets conclude the regular season at 9-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the OAC. Although dropping their final match, Cap remained in the tournament qualification seeding. Capital, the No. 6 seed for the OAC Tournament will travel to Wilmington College, the No. 3 seed, this Tuesday, November 2nd.

Capital found themselves behind in the 30th minute of play as Gabe Sharrock scored what would be his first of two goals on the night. Sharrock took a feed from Carter Ely before putting a shot past Landon Hoehn in the Capital goal.

Capital battered through a physical contest until the 73rd minute when the Cardinals' Liam Herd was whistled for a foul in the penalty area. Chase Geddis stepped up the spot and converted for his second career goal and first of the season. The goal tied the match at 1-1.

Just five minutes later Sharrock would grab his second goal of the game on an unassisted strike, giving Otterbein their advantage back -- one which they wouldn't relinquish the remainder of the match.
All-in-all the Cardinals doubled up Capital shot attempts, 10-5. For the Comets, Rhyan Caruso led the team with two shots, while Matt Scheper, Jacob Taylor and Geddis accounted for the others. Carter Ely and Will Isaac each had three shots for Otterbein.

The goalkeepers were kept fairly quiet as both shot-stoppers only had one save each. Landon Hoehn got the call for Capital, while Andrew McIlvoy started for Otterbein.

Prior to kickoff, the Comets honored eight seniors for their contributions to the program, which included winning an OAC Championship and qualifying for the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Those honored included Majd Awad, Jacob Taylor, Mitch Hughes, Sam Spirk, Chase Geddis, Nehemiah Tanga, Bailey Lach, and Matt Scheper

As mentioned before, despite the result, Capital still locked up a place in the OAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. They will travel to Wilmington on Tuesday, November 2nd. More information and ways to follow the game live will be forthcoming.
