ALLIANCE, Ohio -- On Saturday evening, the Capital University men's soccer team battled tough for 110 minutes of play before settling for a 1-1 draw at the University of Mount Union.
The tie sends Capital record to 8-4-1 on the year and 3-1-1 in OAC play. The Purple Raiders move to 8-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference.
The Comets found themselves trailing early as Mount Union tallied a goal in just the third minute of action. Xavier Pinaya had a nice goal to the upper right corner of the net. Tyler Venti and Colton Priester were both credited with assists on the goal.
Even down a goal, Capital stayed in the match as both teams had even chances to find a goal through the remainder of the first half.
Out of halftime, Mount had a couple of early chances to add to their lead, but the Comets held strong and the Purple Raiders had a handful of offside decisions limiting their opportunities.
Capital continued to press and eventually found the leveling score. The Comets goal came courtesy of freshman
Devon Hess, who scored his third goal of the season and third goal of the week. After a ball was served into
Mitch Hughes, his first attempt to help it on was blocked, but he got a second opportunity. On his flicked header, Hess took a touch and popped the ball up where he swiveled and uncorked a belter of a shot over the head of Mount Union keeper Tyler Venti.
With the tied game, both teams had their fair share of chances to win the game through regulation. Neither team, however, was able to find a goal before the end of the 90 minutes of play, sending the game to overtime.
In the first 10 minutes of extra time, the Purple Raiders pressed hard and out-shot Cap 5-1, including a shot from Ryan Wikle that rang off the post.
In the second period of added time, the roles were reversed and Capital had the majority of chances, with two opportunities coming off the foot of
Brennan Hesse.
Unfortunately for the Comets, they could not muster a finish as the game ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of competition.
For Capital,
Chase Geddis led the team with three shot attempts, while
Mitch Hughes had a pair of attempts at goal. For Mount Union, Wikle led the team with three shot attempts.
In goal,
Connor Sexton went the distance and saved seven shot attempts, while Venti stopped four shots on the other end of the field.
The Comets will look to right the ship back in their favor as they welcome Muskingum to Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday evening. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. against the Muskies.
