Offense Unable to Keep Pace Against Albion College

WOOSTER, Ohio – Capital University women's basketball team took on Albion College Saturday afternoon in the first day of the Nan Nichols Classic, hosted by the College of Wooster. The Britons kept Capital's offense at bay in a game that saw no lead changes.

The Crusaders struggled to find its first points of the game, missing their first four shots of the contest. With a 10-7 lead in the first quarter, Albion received a spark from senior guard Oliva Savage who drained a pair of 3-pointers. The Britons managed to build a 22-13 lead that they took into the second quarter of play.

Erin Risner (Canfield, Ohio) attempted to dig the Purple and White out of its deficit by scoring Capital's first eight points of the second quarter but Albion continued to attack the basket from the paint, making a pair of layups, free throws, a jump shot and a 3-point jumper.

Albion continued have an answer to big plays made by the Crusaders as it drilled a 3-pointer late in the second quarter just moments after a 3-point shot from Meredith Ovies (Franklin, Tenn.). The Britons took a 40-28 lead into the break.

The third quarter featured the lowest scoring totals by both teams as Capital managed just seven points, highlighted by another 3-pointer from Ovies. Albion totaled 11 points in the third quarter as Emily Zgoda ended the quarter with a shot from behind the arc with just 25 seconds left on the clock.

The fourth quarter was the best quarter for both offenses as both teams combined for 47 points. However, Capital was unable to dig itself out of the deficit due to three straight 3-pointers, two from Emily Bernas, in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.

A pair of Crusaders finished with double-digit point totals as senior Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio) registered 14 points while Risner scored 12. The duo were the only Crusaders to record blocks. Fondessy finished the day with four blocks and Risner tallied two.

As a team, Capital made 26-of-59 (.441) field goals and 4-of-11 (.364) from 3-point range.

The Barons were able to take advantage of Capital mistakes, scoring 34 points off Crusader turnovers.

Capital returns to the hardwood tomorrow to face Berea College at 1 p.m.
