Offensive Barrage and Staunch Defense Propel Capital Over Wilmington

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team was in action Wednesday night against Wilmington College. The No. 23/25 ranked Crusaders were led by Daniel Bundschuh with two goals and won 4-0, extending the winning streak to 10 matches.

Cap struck first at the 35-minute mark. Senior Jacob Pulliam (Westerville, Ohio/ Westerville North) sent a ball into the box from 30 yards out. Sophomore Chewy Gordon (Westerville, Ohio/ Westerville Central) scored as he chipped the ball from Pulliam over a diving keeper into the back of the net, giving Cap a 1-0 lead.

Capital took a 1-0 lead into the half. As a team Cap outshot Wilmington 6-3 and produced more corner kicks, 5-2.

Just four minutes into the second half, freshman Greg Knox (Oxford, Mich.) took a throw-in for Cap. Knox threw the ball into the box where senior Alexander Basiakos (Hilliard, Ohio/ Hilliard Bradley) finished with a header, beating the keeper to the far low post.

At the 63-minute mark, senior Cheyn Roux (Davidson, N.C.) sent the ball into the box. Sophomore Daniel Bundschuh (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped the ball into a wide open net after the Wilmington goalie misplayed the ball into the box, giving Cap a 3-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Bundschuh struck again. After Gordon beat a defender one-on-one, he sent a cross into the box. Bundschuh volleyed the ball into the back of the net, making the final score 4-0.

Junior Justin Niswonger picked up his ninth win of the season and improved to 9-0. His goals-against average improved to 0.12 as well as his save percentage to .966 on the season.

The Crusader defense was staunch yet again. The defense allowed only six shots for the game by the Fightin' Quaker attack.

Bundschuh finished the game with two goals, his second and third on the season. Basiakos chipped in with a goal his third on the year. Gordon added a goal and an assist, his third and first respectively. Knox notched his fourth assist on the season, while Pulliam and Roux tabbed their third and second respectively.
