Crusaders' Title Defense Falls Short Against Baldwin Wallace in Finals

Box Score

BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team nearly pulled off a second come-from-behind victory in the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship game, however Baldwin Wallace University successfully defended its home court. The Yellow Jackets held off Capital's late rally to defeat the Crusaders, 50-46, on Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders' tournament title defense came up just short despite making a 13-point Baldwin Wallace lead disappear late in the game.

Down 10 points with just over six minutes remaining, Capital made its last push when senior Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) converted a three-point play after being fouled. Junior Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) came back two possessions later and nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 45-40. Nina Napolitano's aggressive play after a Baldwin Wallace miss paid off when she drove the hole and made a layup to make for a one-possession game, 47-44 with 1:27 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets gave Capital one last chance down the stretch after Sydney Clark was called for traveling. With 42 seconds left, Capital drove down the court but missed two short to mid-range shot attempts. MacKenzie Colombo split a pair of free throws after being fouled, but Clark came up with an offensive rebound that put BW back on the line and her free-throw makes put the game out of reach.

Capital may have never led, but was never out of the contest. Its defense kept Baldwin Wallace's shooting percentages south of 38 percent in each half and forced 13 turnovers that were converted into 12 points. They also outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 38-31. The Crusaders' downfall came by shooting just 35.8 percent from the floor and only getting to the free-throw line 11 times.

Erwin led Capital with 14 points, and also put in four rebounds and two steals off of the bench. Sheets scored 10 points and went 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. The senior also added a team-high four steals and three rebounds.

Napolitano had the best shooting day among the Crusader lineup, hitting 4-of-6 (.667) from the floor.

Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) led the Crusaders with eight rebounds and chipped in three assists.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Clark, who finished with 15 points, Audrey Smolik scored 13 points and led BW with nine rebounds. Baldwin Wallace (22-6) will represent the OAC in the NCAA Division III Tournament after earning the automatic bid.

Capital concludes its season with an overall record of 17-11 and OAC Tournament Runners-Up.

Following the game, Sheets and Erwin were named to the All-OAC Tournament Team.

Over the three-game tournament stretch, Sheets combined to average 9.7 points and pulled down 4.7 rebounds per game. She also added five assists and eight steals while shooting 44 percent from the field.

Erwin served her role well by averaging 10 points per game and was the team's best shooter with a field goal percentage of 45.8 percent.
