Balanced Attack Leads Women's Basketball to Win in Home Opener

Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Thirteen different players found the score sheet as part of the Capital University women's basketball team's 71-50 victory against Ohio Wesleyan University at the Capital Center, Tuesday night. The Crusaders' win in their home opener helped improve their overall record to 2-2 on the young season.

Capital (2-2) began to make its move as early as eight minutes into the game when junior guard Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio) broke an 8-8 tie with a three-point make. That spurred a 9-2 run that created some distance from the Battling Bishops. Senior guard Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) hit back-to-back layups later in the half to help open up their lead to 11 points, 23-12.

Capital's defense helped fuel a second scoring run by keeping the Bishops off of the board for over four minutes while the Crusaders slowly accrued a 16-point advantage heading into the final minute of the half. In the final six minutes of the first half, OWU shot just 2-of-11 from the field.

Senior Monica Heckman (Pitsburg, Ohio) opened up the second half with a three pointer. Teammate Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) answered an OWU three with a trey of her own to maintain a 17-point lead, and junior Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) got in on the fun from outside by knocking down a three-pointer of her own to make for a 47-25 Capital lead with 14 minutes yet to play.

Of Capital's 13 scorers, Sheets led the team with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Junior forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in nine points and tied Sheets and sophomore Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio) for the team lead in rebounds (7).

Thirty-three of Capital's points came off of the bench, led by Fondessy and freshman Chelsea Pla (Macedonia, Ohio), each finishing with six points.

Ohio Wesleyan (2-2) shot just 20 percent from the field, led by Taylor Dickson's 16 points. Laniece McRae (12) joined her in double digits and led the Bishops with nine boards.

Capital will open Ohio Athletic Conference play in its next action at Wilmington College on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
