Late goal leads to season-opening victory for Crusaders

Box Score

The Capital University men's soccer team hosted the lid lifter of their 2013 campaign on Sunday afternoon, as they faced Wittenberg in the final match of the Fort Rapids Men's Soccer Invitational.

Coming into the match, Wittenberg had kicked off their season with a 4-2 victory over Muskingum on day one of the invite this past Friday afternoon.

Last season channeled this same matchup for Capital's season-opener, as the Crusaders fell 1-0 to the Tigers.

However, the Crusaders were looking to turn the tables and get off to a positive start to begin the regular season.

That they did as the Crusaders came out aggressive in the first half tallying eight shots, five of them on goal.

The first goal of the game came in the thirty-ninth minute as freshman Luke Bobst dished a stellar assist to senior Zach Inman, who tapped the ball into the back of the net for his and the team's first goal of the season.

With the late first half goal, the Crusaders headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead, holding Wittenberg to just three shots total.

In the second half of play, the Tigers came right back with a goal of their own in the fiftieth minute.

Following a deflected shot off the post, an unfortunate bounce in favor of Wittenberg led to a goal sent into the bottom left side of the net to even the score at 1-1.

Late in regulation, both squads had back-to-back opportunities to capitalize on shots in the box.

Capital was first as freshman Jacob Pulliam ripped a shot off the cross bar. Just seconds later, the Tigers moved the ball quickly down the field nearly slipping a goal past a host of defenders.

The Crusaders then broke the tie in the eighty-fifth minute, on a textbook cross from freshman Zach Matheny to Bobst who tapped the ball in for the decisive goal.

Leading the way for Capital was Inman and Bobst who netted the two goals of the game, en route to the team's first victory of the regular season.

As a team, the Crusaders recorded thirteen total shots, seven of them on goal, while also saving six shots on the game.

Next on the schedule for Capital (1-0) is a match vs. Colorado College on day one of the Fred Myers Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan on Sept. 6 at 5 p.m.
