Comeback Win On the Road for Women's Basketball

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season, defeating Ohio Wesleyan on the road Tuesday night, 72-65.

Three of the Crusaders' five starters scored in double figures in the contest, as senior forward Jamie Caton led the team with 18 points on six of 14 shooting, scoring 14 second half points, while also tallying four assists on the night.

Junior center Monica Heckman put together her second impressive game in a row for the Crusaders, posting a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, including four offensive rebounds.

Also, sophomore forward Kristen Thompson helped lead the Capital offense, recording 12 points and six rebounds.

After shooting 35.5 percent in the first half and trailing by four points at halftime to the Battling Bishops, the Crusaders outscored their opponent by 11 points in the second half.

Both teams traded baskets as the final half got underway, before the Crusaders put together a couple of short runs to pull ahead midway through the second half.

Following a layup and free throw by sophomore guard Nina Napolitano that gave Capital a 58-57 lead, junior guard Shelby Sheets capitalized on two free throws to extend the lead to three points with under five minutes remaining.

From the time of Napolitano's free throw, the Crusaders closed the game out on a 15 to eight run on the Battling Bishops, en route to a seven point non-conference road win.

Junior guard Shelby Sheets also played a key role in the Crusader attack, scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds, while senior guard Cookie Geroski made her presence known, tallying eight points and eight rebounds on the night.

Napolitano chipped in eight points and four rebounds off the bench, while fellow classmate and guard Jenna Irwin checked in with four points and two rebounds also in a reserve role.

In total, the Crusaders shot 42.4 percent from the field for the game, holding the Battling Bishops to a 35.2 percent shooting mark.

With the win, Capital (2-2 overall) looks to continue improving its early season record, as they are set to open Ohio Athletic Conference play, traveling to Heidelberg on Dec. 4 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Tiffin, Ohio.
