The Capital University women's basketball team (9-4, 4-2 OAC) fell at home in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon to rival Otterbein (10-3, 4-2 OAC) by a final of 64-39, snapping the team's 10-game home winning streak dating back to last season.
Senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) recorded 10 points and four rebounds, and junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) contributed with 10 points, five assists and three steals to lead the way for the Crusaders.
Freshman guard Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) also chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
The Crusaders and Cardinals were neck and neck in the opening five minutes as both teams came out strong defensively. However, two quick 3-pointers by the visiting Cardinals would force Capital into a timeout as the team fell behind 16-8 with 13:03 remaining in the opening period.
From there, Otterbein took over behind the arc, connecting on three additional 3-pointers to spark a 19-10 run to close the half leading 35-18.
Capital was held to 20.7 percent from the floor in the first half on 6-of-29 shooting while the defense surrendered 43.5 percent shooting to Otterbein.
In second half of action, the Crusaders battled back and were able to cut the large deficit down to 11 with 9:54 remaining in the contest.
However, the Cardinals would prove to be too much for the Crusaders down the stretch as they closed the game on an 18-4 run to put away Capital for good.
The Cardinals connected on 43.2 percent of their shots for the game while the Crusaders missed all seven of their free throw attempts in the second half.
Offensively, the Crusaders would finish at 26.9 percent from the field on 14-of-52 shooting in the loss.
Capital returns to action this Wednesday, January 9, when it hosts the Muskies of Muskingum for a 7:30 tip at the Capital Center.
