COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team was stunned in the final two minutes of the contest, falling 3-2 in two overtimes against Denison in a non-conference affair at Bernlohr Stadium.
Denison struck on a goal in the 109th minute, sending the Crusaders to a crushing loss. Capital (1-2 overall) had twice come back from a deficit
Trailing 2-1, the Crusaders earned a penalty kick in the 88th minute when the Big Red (2-0-1) committed a hand ball just in front of the goal. Sophomore R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio; at right) tied the game on the PK, sending his shot into the lower right corner.
Senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio) netted his team-leading second goal of the year on a beautiful set play just 16 seconds into the second half for Capital. Argyris took a pass in the middle from junior Nick Eley (Pickerington, Ohio) and sent it over the head of the keeper to even the match at 1-1.
Denison tallied again in the 76th minute to take a 2-1 advantage, setting up the Crusaders' late heroics.
Junior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) tallied seven saves for Capital, which was outshot 17-11 in the contest.
The Crusaders travel to Angola, Ind., this weekend for a pair of games at Trine. Capital plays the host on Friday at 7 p.m., and closes tournament play Saturday against Kalamazoo (Mich.) at 2 p.m.
