The Capital University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches Saturday with a 1-1 tie at John Carroll in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams at University Heights, Ohio.
The Crusaders (5-2-3 overall, 0-0-1 OAC), who are 4-0-3 over that stretch, were outshot 25-15 for the contest but held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and posted five shots in the overtime periods. Capital played its second straight contest without junior captain R.G.
Florey (Westerville, Ohio), its second-leading scorer.
"R.G. is a big determining factor of our success and a captain and leader, so playing without him affected us," Capital coach Alan Yost said. "We struggled in the first half, but made some tactical adjustments in the second half. We did alright, but we're still not quite where we'd like to be."
Junior Tim McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio; at right) provided Capital's lone goal in the 39th minute off an assist from senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio).
John Carroll (4-5-1, 0-0-1) had scored in the 20th minute off a rebound.
Junior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) played all 110 minutes and made eight saves to move his record to 3-2-3 for the year.
"Bob had a fantastic game," Yost said.
The Crusaders continue conference play Tuesday against Ohio Northern, which was ranked 13th in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 Poll and 18th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
"We can't afford to have a bad game," Yost said. "Anyone in this conference can win on any given day. We have to be ready to battle every time."
