COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games against a sterling opponent Saturday, tying local rival Ohio Wesleyan 1-1 in a non-conference contest at Bernlohr Stadium.
Sophomore R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio; at right) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year to tie the affair in the 81st minute for the Crusaders (4-2-2 overall). Freshman Chris Mir-Salimi (Strongsville, Ohio) earned the assist on the play just moments after testing the keeper with a tough shot.
Capital was outshot 21-14 in the contest but held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks over the Battling Bishops (5-1-2), the defending NCAA Division III champions who entered the week ranked No. 21 by D3soccer.com and knocked off eighth-ranked Ohio Northern on Wednesday.
Returning to the lineup after a three-match layoff due to injury, junior Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) was solid in goal, tallying 10 saves against a strong Ohio Wesleyan attack.
The Battling Bishops took the lead in the 36th minute on a cross played through from the right side to the left post.
After Florey's tally tied the contest and sent it into overtime, the Crusaders outshot Ohio Wesleyan 4-3 in the two extra periods, finishing the game strong despite blustery conditions during the overtimes.
Capital finishes up its four-match home stand this Wednesday against Wabash (Ind.). Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
