Capital Coasts to Victory in OAC Opener

COLUMBUS – The Capital University women's basketball team played one of its most efficient games of the season Wednesday in a 76-43 triumph over Heidelberg in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams at the Capital Center.

The Crusaders (5-2 overall, 1-0 OAC) shot 48.4 percent from the floor, including 54.8 percent in the second half, and posted 21 assists on 30 made field goals.

Eleven players played 11 or more minutes in the contest, and Capital held the 'Berg (3-2, 0-1) to 32.2 percent shooting, including 3-for-28 (10.7 percent) from 3-point range.

"It was a solid effort by all who played," Capital coach Dixie Jeffers said. "Our minutes distribution was awesome. We definitely had a more consistent flow in the second half … our overall play of moving the ball efficiently was awesome.

"We need to refocus tomorrow for a tough Baldwin Wallace team coming in on Saturday."

Junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) and senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) scored 11 points apiece to pace the Crusader attack. Timmerman scored nine points in the first 5:40 of the contest as Capital jumped out to a 17-4 advantage.

Freshman guard Simmone Gage (Dayton, Ohio) enjoyed a fine all-around game, posting 10 points, six assists and five rebounds. Classmate Kristin Reisinger, a forward from Washington Court House, Ohio, recorded eight points and three rebounds in 13 minutes.

The Crusaders led 33-21 at the half and extended their lead to 46-23 with 15:26 to play in the affair following a jumper by sophomore Monica Heckman (Pitsburg, Ohio). The game's final margin was Capital's largest lead of the game.

The Crusaders scored 17 points off 18 Heidelberg turnovers and tallied eight fast-break points in the opening period.

Capital returns home this Saturday against Baldwin Wallace at 4 p.m. The game is part of a men's-women's doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets at the Capital Center.
