COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team won its fourth straight match Tuesday with a 3-0 triumph over Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest at Bernlohr Stadium.
With the win, the Crusaders (9-5-3, 4-3-1 OAC) clinch a berth in the OAC Tournament, which begins next week Monday. Capital is currently in fifth place with the final regular season matches to be played this Saturday.
Junior Nick Eley (Pickerington, Ohio) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 14th minute, taking a touch from freshman Craig Shimer (Hilliard, Ohio; at right) and ripping a low, hard shot into the left corner from the top of the box. It was Eley's fourth tally of the season.
Senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio) doubled the Crusaders' advantage in the 67th minute on a long pass over the top from sophomore R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio). Argyris now leads the team with eight goals for the campaign.
The Muskies (5-10-3, 2-5) continued to pressure the Capital defense, but the Crusaders held strong, adding an insurance goal in the 83rd as Shimer found junior Tim McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio) with a long pass.
Capital outshot Muskingum 14-4 and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeepers Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) and Dylan Beck (Wharton, Ohio) combined for three saves in the shutout.
Prior to the match, Argyris and fellow seniors Casey Blankenship (Galloway, Ohio) and Tyler Fountain (Upper Arlington, Ohio) were recognized on the field in their final match on the Bernlohr turf.
The Crusaders wrap up the regular season this Saturday at Otterbein. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Westerville, Ohio, and is the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader.
