COLUMBUS – The Capital University women's basketball team shot 53.8 percent from the floor and received contributions from across the board Wednesday in a 67-59 victory over local rival Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference contest at the Capital Center.
Junior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) and freshman guard Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio; at right) scored 16 points apiece to lead the Crusaders (4-2 overall), who recovered from a 32-30 halftime deficit to outscore the Battling Bishops 37-27 in the second half.
Capital held Ohio Wesleyan (1-4) to 37.5 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers despite allowing 19 offensive rebounds. The Crusaders also shot 11-of-13, including 9-of-11 in the second half, from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) finished with eight points off the Capital bench and was one of six Crusaders with six points or more. Senior Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) contributed with team-highs of six rebounds and four assists to go along with her six points.
Capital held the lead throughout the first half, leading by as many as 10 before the Bishops ended the period on a 14-2 run to take a two-point advantage into the locker room.
After turning the ball over 12 times in the first, the Crusaders were much sharper in the second half, shooting 56 percent in the period and recording just five turnovers. Capital took a 54-45 advantage with 7:06 to play following a jumper by Sheets and led by no fewer than five the rest of the way.
The Crusaders' bench outscored OWU's reserves 33-14 in the affair.
Capital returns to play next Wednesday at home against Heidelberg for its Ohio Athletic Conference opener. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Capital Center.
