The Capital University women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 season Friday and was defeated 78-58 against Kenyon in a non-conference affair at Anderson, Ind.
The Crusaders (0-1 overall) shot 42.6 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers in the loss, while the Ladies hit 55.8 percent of their attempts and knocked down 11 three-pointers.
Sophomore guard Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) led Capital with 11 points off the bench. Junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) and junior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) finished with 10 points apiece, while senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) posted nine.
Caton grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while Timmerman and Geroski were close behind with six and five, respectively.
Kenyon (1-0) pushed to a 30-17 advantage midway through the first half. A jumper by Caton with 5:56 on the clock cut the Crusaders' deficit to 35-27, but the Ladies took advantage of a Capital dry spell to end the period with an 11-0 run to take a 46-27 advantage into the locker room.
The Crusaders were unable to respond early in the second half and Kenyon took a 30-point lead with 13:40 to play and didn't look back, leading by as many as 31 in the frame.
Capital's reserves outscored Kenyon's by a 21-9 margin, led by Sheets. The Crusaders also held a 32-29 rebounding advantage.
Capital concluded play at Anderson tomorrow against the loser of tonight's Fontbonne (Mo.)-Anderson contest at 2 p.m.
