Cody Hurley became one of the youngest collegiate head coaches in the country after his 2019 hire as head men’s tennis coach at Capital University at just 26 years of age. Hurley, a 2019 graduate of Ohio Northern University, revitalized Capital in its return to the court as they restarted competition in 2020-21 for the first time since the 2017-18 season concluded. He will begin his third full season in charge of Capital men's tennis during the 2022-23 academic year.Â
So far at Capital, Hurley has oversaw the play of six All-OAC student-athletes, including three first team honorees. The four selections after the 2022 season was the most ina single season dating back to at least 2002. Also on the court, Hurley guided two individuals to OAC Player of the Week honors during the 2022 spring campaign. Additionally, under his mentorship, Capital tennis has seen six student-athletes named Academic All-OAC. Outside of the conference, Hurley mentored Capital to an ITA All-Academic Team honor in 2021, which also saw the naming of three individuals to the ITA Scholar Athlete list that season.Â

Hurley played at two NCAA Division III schools and has accumulated coaching experience through his work at the college and high school ranks, plus various high-quality tennis camps prior to joining Capital. Along the way, Hurley learned from some of the best collegiate tennis coaches in the country including those from The Ohio State University, University of Southern California, University of Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Amherst College, and Denison University.

Prior to his hire at Capital, he was an assistant at Ohio Northern and helped the Polar Bears advance to the 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference championship match where they finished tournament runners-up. That season featured four players on the All-OAC teams, including OAC Player of the Year Vinh Thai. ONU housed four ITA All-Academic Scholar Athletes and two All-OAC Academic honorees. The men’s tennis team went 14-9 overall and 5-2 against OAC competition in the 2018-19 season.

Hurley began his collegiate tennis career at Mount St. Joseph University where he was named to the All-HCAC team as a freshman in 2015. The following year he was named team captain of the Lions. He transferred to Ohio Northern prior to his junior season and despite various injuries, he went on to begin the season 13-0. In 2017 he led the Polar Bears in doubles win percentage (.733) and in 2018 held the highest singles win percentage (.705). Over the course of his career, Hurley played every position up to first singles and first doubles.

Beginning in the summer of 2017, Hurley began making his name in the coaching ranks by working various camps. Over the last two-plus years, he has worked Wilson Collegiate and Nike tennis camps at various locations in Ohio, California and New Jersey where he has coached talented played from the varsity high school to Division I ranks. He has served as the tennis director at Pleasant Hill Swim and Racquet Club (2013-14) and tennis instructor at the Dayton Country Club (2016). In addition, Hurley has volunteered his services as a coach to his alma mater, Centerville High School (2014), and the Oak Hills school district (2015) before taking his first dip into the collegiate ranks. As a student in 2015, Hurley served as a volunteer assistant coach at Mount St. Joseph University.

Hurley took a major step in his coaching career when in 2018 he was named head boys’ tennis coach at Ada High School (Ada, Ohio), a post he held through the 2019 season. He helped AHS break 10 school records and qualify for the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association (OTCA) regional semifinals for the first time in program history behind a 14-5 overall record. Among his achievements at Ada High School he coached three players to 20-plus win seasons, three district qualifiers, one sectional singles champion and one player that became an NCAA Division III commit. Collectively, his team set records for individual matches won (90), singles matches won (71), doubles matches won (19), and dual match wins (14) in a single season. Under his leadership, Ada High School became one of three boys programs in 20 years to qualify all three singles players to the OHSAA district tournament and became the only school to qualify a female to the OHSAA boys’ district tournament.
