COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team advanced to the Ohio Athletic Conference semifinals on Monday afternoon, defeating Baldwin Wallace, 2-1, in a quarterfinals match at Bernlohr Stadium.

In the opening half, the Yellow Jackets scored in the 18th minute of play, on a shot by sophomore Zach Smith that was shot inside the box after being collected from a rebound off of the Crusaders' senior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber.

The remainder of the first half saw no shots result in a goal for either team, as the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

As the second half unfolded, the Crusaders managed to push the tempo on their opposition, scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes of play.

Capital's first goal of the game came on a corner kick by freshman Colton Phillips, to which sophomore Josh Spaw headed into the net for a game-tying goal.

Then in the 87th minute, the Crusaders took their first lead of the match, as Weisgarber punted a free kick from beyond midfield, sailing the ball over the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper to give Capital a 2-1 advantage.

The Crusaders managed to maintain their advantage in momentum, closing out the Yellow Jackets, 2-1.

In total, Capital recorded nine of its 15 shots on goal, as opposed to Baldwin Wallace's mark of six of 12 shots on goal.

Leading the way for the Crusaders was Spaw, scoring his second goal of the season, while Weisgarber tallied the first goal of his career as a Crusader.

With the quarterfinals in the books, Capital (9-7-3 overall) travels to Ada, Ohio on Nov. 6 for an OAC Tournament semifinals match against No. 1 seeded Ohio Northern.

First kick is set for 2 p.m.
