COLUMBUS, Ohio – Continuing the newfound tradition of celebrating the on- and off-field successes of Capital University student-athletes and those that help sustain excellence, Capital Athletics held its second annual CAPSPY’s awards banquet. The event was hosted on Sunday evening by one of Crusader Athletics’ strongest supporters – The Marriott at the Columbus Airport.

Complete list of award winners

The CAPSPY’s is an event established last year by the Capital Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as a way to celebrate the successes of student-athletes and those that support them. This year, the Capital University Society of Sports Management (CUSSM) partnered to co-sponsor the event with SAAC.  Award winners are based on accomplishments accumulated from the spring of the previous academic year through the current winter athletic season.

The flagship awards for Male and Female Senior Athlete of the Year rounded out Sunday evening’s programming. All-conference forward Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) of the men’s basketball team won Male Senior Athlete of the Year, while all-conference guard Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) was honored with Female Senior Athlete of the Year laurels.

The We ‘C’ You Award was handed out for the first time to recognize a Capital faculty or staff member for their support of Crusader Athletics. The inaugural winner was Associate Professor Suzanne Marilley of the political science program.

In another supporting role award, Sarah Clagg was honored with the Robert Thorne Sports Medicine Award.

Two team awards were passed out, first to the women’s cross country team for highest team grade point average, and a second for the Team Community Service Award, which was given to Capital Softball.
