WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Thursday evening, Capital Women's Cross Country got its first action of the year in a dual meet with Otterbein University. Capital was faced with a tough task racing two Otterbein teams where they were eventually outscored by the Cardinals in the Otterbein Early Bird Open.
Junior Hannah Westhoven (Napolean, Ohio) finished in seventh place in a field of 34, leading the way for the Purple and White as she crossed the line first for Capital in a time of 20:17.56.
Senior Sarah Rini (Pickerington, Ohio / Pickerington North) crossed the finish line seconds after Westhoven at 21:07.95. Three consecutive runners came after Rini, including sophomore Mackenzie Meyers (Ashville, Ohio) at 21:35.70, plus the senior pair of Gretchen Sauder (Mansfield, Ohio) at 21:59.95, and Al Corrigan (Burton, Ohio) in a time of 22:00.21 .
Five runners made their collegiate debuts in the race including Alex Klemens (Canton, Ohio) at 23:27.01, Jill Rhodes (Blacklick, Ohio) at 23:28.72, Danielle Shevitz (Sholon, Ohio) at 24:29.23, Emilly Waldvogel (Mechanicsburg, Ohio) at 26:39.14, and Donna Mayhew (Galloway, Ohio) rounding out the group with a time of 26.55.06.
Otterbein's red team placed first with a team score of 22 points, followed by its white team with 39, and Capital wrapping it up with 65 points .
Capital will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Capital Invitational in Delaware, Ohio.
