Volleyball Downed by No. 11 Ohio Northern

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team hosted the nationally-ranked Ohio Northern University at The Capital Center Performance Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears took a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-12) victory away to stay unbeaten in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings, while Capital fell to 9-19, 0-7 in the OAC

  • Ohio Northern (22-4, 7-0 OAC) came into the match ranked No. 11 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
  • The Polar Bears hit .347 as a team for the match and twice hit better than 40 percent in a set. Capital hit just .034 as a team.
  • The Crusaders struggled to get through the Ohio Northern front line after the Polar Bears put down 11 total blocks.
  • Capital combined for five service errors, three block errors, and four reception errors to add to its misfortunes.


  • Senior hitter Kirsten Jutte (Fort Recovery, Ohio / Fort Recovery) led all players with 14 kills on 34 attempts (.147), and added two block assists.
  • Maddie Ellis led ONU with eight kills to just one error (.583) while teammate McKenna Jordan tallied seven kills and zero errors (.389).
  • Defensively, ONU libero McKenna Hostetler totaled 14 digs, while teammate Madison Kern posted five block assists and one solo block at the net.
  • Sophomore Erin O'Connell shared the match lead with 14 digs, while junior Jessica Gavlak led the team with three block assists.


Capital (9-19, 0-7 OAC) has two matches remaining this season and need to win both in order to keep its postseason hopes alive. Its next test will be against Wilmington College (3-22, 0-7 OAC) at home on Tuesday, October 29. Prior to the 7 p.m. start time, Capital will recognize and thank its two seniors, Kirsten Jutte and Carlie Wilson as part of its Senior Day festivities.
