Volleyball has Rough Go in OAC Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-12) victory behind very strong offensive numbers.

Final statistics

Baldwin Wallace (18-1, 1-0 OAC) took an early 1-0 lead behind a 25-9 first-set win in which the Yellow Jackets hit .611 as a team. They registered 12 kills on 18 attempts and committed just one error. Conversely, Capital hit in the negative and into three blocks.

While the Yellow Jackets did not match its offensive numbers of the first set, they still hit a respectable .269 (19-5-52) as part of a much more competitive second set. BW broke away with the two teams tied 14-14 with a 5-1 run and carried that all the way to a 25-20 win to go up 2-0.

The Crusaders were unable to turn its fortunes around as the Yellow Jackets continued to hit for high marks. BW's offense accumulated 13 kills and hit .458 in its third-set win over Cap to clinch the match. Cap's third set saw its best hit percentage but came in at .125.

Senior Kirsten Jutte led the Crusaders with nine kills and hit .438 (9-2-16) on the afternoon. Sophomore Erin O'Connell led the defense with 11 digs.

BW's Alexis Garrett had a match-high 12 kills (.667) and was one of four Yellow Jackets with two or more blocks. Baldwin Wallace recorded six blocks to Capital's zero.

Capital (8-13, 0-1 OAC) will prepare for its next contest on Tuesday, October 8 against Heidelberg University. First service is set for 7 p.m. at The Capital Center.
