COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team hosted the John Carroll University Blue Streaks at The Capital Center Performance Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Streaks won the match in three sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-16).
Capital (0-18, 0-3 OAC) got off to a good start by jumping out to a 6-2 run in the first set with help from two service aces by sophomore Isabel Jimenez, but by the time both teams hit double-digit point totals the Blue Streaks had closed the gap. The guests continued their run to build a four-point lead with help from two Brooke Hjerpe kills, and JCU held on to that advantage to win the first set.
Cap hit its best in the first, possessing an attack percentage of .231, led by Kirsten Jutte and her four kills in the set. Freshman Olivia Hale recorded six of her seven digs in the opening frame, as well.
The Blue Streaks (12-8, 1-3 OAC) saw its hit percentage grow from .282 in the first to .342 in the second set, while Capital's numbers in that department dipped. The JCU defense kept the ball off the ground and gave its offense every opportunity to score. Sarah Calabrese posted five of her team-high nine kills in the second set and started what would be a 6-1 run that built a gap that Cap was unable to overcome.
Though Capital's defense helped lower the JCU offensive numbers in the third, its offense was unable to keep up with the Blue Streaks. Tied 15-15, two Capital attack errors combined with two Calabrese kills and a JCU block helped the visitors build a four-point lead that fed into a 7-0 run to end the game.
Leighann Osbourn (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) led the Crusaders with seven kills (.148) and was followed by Hale and Delanie Nahikian, who both finished with five kills. Hale's seven digs also served as a team lead. Jimenez had a team-high 10 assists.
Four Blue Streaks had eight or more kills on the day, led by Calabrese (.409) and Audrey Hardig's (.900) nine. Calabrese also led the team with 14 digs and three block assists.
Capital will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Marietta College on Tuesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. from inside The Capital Center Performance Arena.
