CLEVELAND, Ohio – Capital University Volleyball was unable to procure a win while at the CWRU Invitational, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. On Saturday, the Crusaders lost both of its matches by scores of 3-1 to Defiance College and 3-0 versus Hiram College at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

MATCH 1 - Defiance 3, Capital 1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14)

Defiance ran away with the first set by a wide margin but that did not deter Capital from putting up a fight to get back into the match in the second.

Delanie Nahikian took to the service line and helped Cap build a four-point buffer with a service ace and two kills by sophomore hitter Leighann Osborne. The Yellow Jackets came back to within one, but another outburst of offense by Cap this time generated a six-point lead. In on the run was Osborne, Nahikian, Carlie Wilson, and a pair of errors by Defiance. Up 20-14 following back-to-back kills by freshman Olivia Hale (Enon, Ohio/Greenon), the Crusaders were able to use the lead to its advantage and rode it to a 25-21 win to tie the match back up.

Capital had an excellent opportunity to go up 2-1 on Defiance and possessed a 20-16 lead late in the third frame. However, the Yellow Jackets came back to score six straight points following two Capital errors and three services aces dealt by Jamie DeTro. This fueled a 9-2 run to end the third and give Defiance the lead instead.

The Yellow Jackets then slowly broke away from the Crusaders in the fourth set to claim its first victory of the season, 3-1.

Two Crusaders ended the match with 10 or more kills including Osborne (11) and Hale (10). Freshman setter Jenay Kocsis (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) set a new career high with 35 assists in the match.

MATCH 2 - Hiram 3, Capital 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-14)

The Terriers took the first set easily and again the Crusaders bounced back with fervor in the second. Capital drove the score to a 17-17 tie deep into the second frame before the undefeated Terriers came out with an 8-2 run to close out the frame. The Terriers strung together five kills in the breakout, which led to a 2-0 match lead.

The Crusaders did not fare much better in the third, falling behind early, 14-6. Coming off a set in which they hit at nearly a 30 percent success rate, Hiram continued to attack well with 11 kills to just five errors in the clinching third set. Conversely, Capital had four kills to its nine errors in the final frame which resulted in a 25-14 Terrier win.

For her efforts over the weekend, Isabel Jimenez was named as Capital's representative for the CWRU Invitational All-Tournament Team. In three matches, she tallied 39 digs on the defensive end plus 12 assists.

Capital (0-7) will continue its month-long string of road contests on Tuesday when they head up the road to Gambier, Ohio to play the Kenyon College Ladies (6-0) at 7 p.m.
