RICHMOND, Ind. – Capital University Volleyball closed up their weekend in Richmond, Ind. at the 2017 Quaker Classic, hosted by Earlham College. The Purple and White had one last contest scheduled on Sunday, this time against Indiana University-East. Capital fell in straight sets to the Red Wolves, to take its overall record to 4-4 heading into this Wednesday's contest at Denison University.
Despite another double-digit kill performance by senior Kasey Parkhurst (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta), the Crusaders were unable to contain the two-headed threat of IUE's Breanna Kopke and Maria Brasel. The duo combined for 23 kills and each hit north of 25 percent in the match. The Red Wolves benefited from nine service aces and six blocks, while limited Capital to a team hit percentage of .153.
Neither team held more than a two-point lead in the first until IUE's breakaway behind Madison Yoder at the service line. A pair of Capital errors, an ace and a kill by Sophie Rogers helped build a five-point advantage, 23-18, and the Crusaders were unable to answer. IUE took the set, 25-19.
The second set told a different tale. Capital came back from four points down late to tie the game, 24-24, with help from three different errors by the Red Wolves plus a key block by freshmen Bryanna Masters and Leighann Osborne. However, IUE scored the next two points to clinch the set.
Indiana-East took the third and final set by the same score of set one, 25-19.
Parkhurst led Cap with 13 kills and hit .294 in the match. Osborne supplemented Capital's offense with nine kills and also added a team-high two block assists. Freshman Morgan Tripp (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Community) added 15 assists and four digs.
Capital (4-4) will play Denison University in Granville, Ohio on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
