COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team was in action Saturday afternoon against the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. Cap falls in three sets (25-16, 27-25, 25-17), McCracken leads the way with 18 digs and 15 kills.
Despite losing the first set 25-16, Capital produced more digs, 17-14, than John Carroll. Senior Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio/ Newark Catholic) led Cap with four kills, added five digs and one assist in the first set. Senior Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kansas) tallied three kills. Junior Jess Winstel (Milford, Ohio) produced a set-high seven digs and chipped in with one assist. Freshman Kirsten Jutte (Fort Recovery, Ohio) assisted on eight kills to pave the way for Capital. JCU went on a 7-2 run to start the first set. The Blue Streak lead reached a high of 10 points before the Crusaders cut the lead down to six. John Carroll ended the first set with a 3-0 run.
The second set was complete opposite of the first set and saw six tie scores and five lead changes. Like the first set, JCU opened with a run, 5-1. With the score 20-14, the Crusaders managed to cut the lead to 20-18. Capital went on a 3-0 run with the score 21-19, to take its first lead of the set 22-21. Cap had a service for match point, 24-23. After JCU tied the match at 24, the Blue Streaks had set point before Capital tied the game at 25. The Crusaders recorded more kills, 17-11 in the losing effort. McCracken had a set-high nine kills while adding four digs and one assist. Jutte tallied a set-high 13 assists. Senior Kirsten Nickles (Loudonville, Ohio) led Cap with six digs and chipped in with three kills.
Capital started the third set with an 8-3 run, before JCU tied it 8-8. Cap battled off two match points, before falling 25-17. Nickles led all Capital hitters with four kills in the third set. McCracken finish set number two with two kills, but had a set-high nine digs. Jutte added nine assist and Winstel chipped in with four digs.
McCracken posted a match-high 15 kills and led Cap with 18 digs. Nickles finished the match with eight kills. Winstel finished with 16 digs. Jutte amassed a match-high 30 assists. Senior Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) and Ewart both recorded three block assists to lead Cap.
Capital falls to 5-20 overall and 1-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio, to battle the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
