Despite Valiant Effort, Crusaders Fall Short in Season Finale

Capital University's volleyball team fought hard in Saturday's loss against the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. BW held off the Crusaders by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-21.

Capital won the second set thanks to its quick start. The set began with a 6-1 Crusader run that began with Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) scoring two of Capital's first three points. Senior setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) assisted her in those kills.

The Crusaders held an 11-6 lead until the Yellow Jackets stormed back to tie the match at 13 due to a pair of kills from freshman outside hitter Morgan Thomas.

Capital took back the momentum on the heels of five BW errors and a service ace from Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio), extending Capital's lead to 20-15. Capital leading 24-21, Bender scored the set-point as the Crusaders went into the break, tied 1-1.

Both team's finished with 51 kills and 49 assists as BW led Capital in digs (49-39), and kill percentage (.220-.203). The Crusaders bested the Yellow Jackets in total attacks (138-123), service aces (6-2), blocks (9-5) and points (66-58).

Graysan Braun (Springfield, Ohio) paced Capital with 12 kills on 26 attacks, good for a .308 kill percentage.  Braun also finished with 14.5 points, three block assists and a solo block.

Weilbacher, Capital's lone senior was honored before the match as it was her last match in the purple and white. She finished the day with a season-high 45 assists.
