STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Capital University Volleyball ended its 12-match losing streak with a nonconference win over Franciscan University on Friday night. The Crusaders defeated the Barons in five sets (25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-8) at Kuzma Court.

Sophomore Graysan Braun (Springfield, Ohio) had a career day, setting a new high for kills in a match with 16. Her previous high was 10 set earlier this year.

Capital was one game away from another loss but came back and won the final two sets by seven points, each. The Barons had momentum by taking the third set after going on an 11-point run, but Capital answered that by scoring eight of the first 10 points in the following game. Capital held that advantage through the course of the set, inducing a race to 15 in the fifth.

Tied 6-6 in the fifth set, Capital went on a 5-1 run with aid from a pair of kills by sophomore Kasey Parkhurst (Castalia, Ohio). Braun and Parkhurst scored each of the final three points to seal the deal for Capital and earn the team its fifth win of the season.

Junior Kirsten Nickles (Loudonville, Ohio) tied a season high with 10 kills, a mark she had now hit three times this season. Nickles completed her double-double effort by adding 17 digs, as well.

Freshman Rachel Meier (St. Marys, Ohio) had a good night at the service line, tallying five service aces. She also tallied 12 digs. Sophomore Jessica Winstel (Milford, Ohio) posted 28 digs on the defensive end.

Franciscan (8-13) was led by Christina Lawrence with her 12 kills and 15 digs. She also added two block assists.

Capital will jump back into conference play next Tuesday, Oct. 13 when they host Wilmington College at The Capital Center. First service is set for 7 p.m.
