Volleyball Ends Stay at Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER, Ohio – A second five-set loss just this weekend marred Capital Volleyball's stay at the Wooster Invitational. The Crusaders suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of Albion College and Bluffton College, dropping their overall record to 4-10.

 

MATCH 1 – vs. Albion, L 3-1

Capital began the day with a four-set loss at the hands of the Brits (9-3). Capital dropped the first set, 25-17, before rallying to tie the match in the second by a 25-20 count. Despite a valiant bout, Capital fell behind after a 25-23 loss in the third set. Albion put the Crusaders away in the fourth, 25-17.

Junior Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) led the offense with 11 kills and hits at a .350 clip after committing just four errors on 20 tries. She also led the Crusaders with three block assists.

Sophomore Kasey Parkhurst (Castalia, Ohio) had nine kills and also added four digs and two block assists.

Albion featured three players with 10 or more kills. Taylor Rosenthal and Stephanie Thurner each had a team-leading 14 kills while Halle Thom posted 13. Thom completed a double-double effort with 11 digs.

 

MATCH 2 – vs. Bluffton, L 3-2

Capital's loss to Bluffton came in a back-and-forth affair with both teams swapping wins over the first four sets. However, the Beavers edged the Crusaders, 15-11, to clinch the match.

Parkhurst paced the Capital offense with 15 kills and finished off a double-double performance with 10 digs.

She was one of three Crusaders with 10 or more kills after Bender closed out the match with 12 kills and freshman Nichole Webber (Youngstown, Ohio) with 10.

Sophomore Jessica Winstel (Milford, Ohio) had another solid performance on the defensive side with 25 digs and tossed up four assists.

Senior Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) dished up 28 assists to help orchestrate Capital's offensive effort.

 

Weilbacher was selected to be Capital representative on the Wooster Invitational All-Tournament Team. She finished the weekend with a total of 105 assists, averaging 26.3 per match. She also collected eight service aces and 29 digs.

Capital is next in action against Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in Delaware, Ohio.
