WOOSTER, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team saw its three-match win streak come to an end after falling twice in the opening day of the Wooster Invitational. Friday sported losses to the tournament host, The College of Wooster, and Muskingum University by counts of 3-0 and 3-2, respectively.
MATCH 1 – L, 3-0 at The College of Wooster
Capital lost its first match of the day against the host Fighting Scots, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 27-25), snapping its recent three-match win streak.
Errors marred Capital's offensive efforts after the team committed 23 miscues and they hit at a .128 attack percentage. Their hit percentage steadily improved over the course of the match but never topped 15.4 percent.
Junior Hannah Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) led Capital with 11 kills on 29 attempts (.138). Sophomore Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) served as the second Crusader with at least 10 kills, hitting that mark and attacking with a success rate of .227.
Bender also led the team with two solo blocks and four block assists at the net.
On the other side of the net, Wooster's Lydia Webster and Savannah Moore both finished with 10 kills apiece. Moore hit at a 38.9 percent success rate and added eight digs.
MATCH 2 – L, 3-2 vs. Muskingum University
The second match of the evening fared better for the Crusaders, though they lost in five sets to the Muskies of Muskingum University. The final score of the match read 19-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-22, 15-9 giving Muskingum the win. More details of the match will be provided at a later time.
Capital will play Albion College and Bluffton College on Saturday morning.
